Jerup strand

Jerup is a lovely railway village, facing the bay Aalbæk bugt on the east coast about 12 kilometres northwest of Frederikshavn. The beaches here at Aalbæk bugt are probably the most child friendly in Denmark – with dunes, broad sandy beach and shallow water.

At Jerup you find Denmark’s largest area of a unique kind of landscape. It is called “ridge and swale” landscape and consists of seabed turned into land. Just south of Jerup lies the protected natural area Tolshave, also home to a population of the endangered butterfly marsh fritillary. Butterflies thrive here, and more than 40 species have been registered in the area.

In our holiday homes in Jerup you are close to nature and can really relax. Yet you are not far from the urban life in Frederikshavn and Skagen. The local train stops in Jerup on its way between Frederikshavn and Skagen.

A bit southeast of Jerup is Frederikshavn – the seaport with one of Denmark’s longest pedestrian streets. Along this street, and in its side streets, you find many shops, cosy cafés and good restaurants. The kids will love a day at either the huge indoor play area Fun House, the indoor “Caribbean” water park (The Reef) or the exotic Palm Beach. From Frederikshavn there are ferries to Læsø, Sweden and Norway – and going with the post boat you can visit Hirsholmene, a small cluster of islets just east of Frederikshavn.

When in this part of Denmark, don't forget to visit Skagen. The idyllic town, 25 kilometres north of Jerup, has been attracting visitors for centuries with its special atmosphere and unique location at the most northerly tip of Denmark. This jolly seaside town is a charming combination of arts museums and galleries, a busy harbour, soft sandy beaches, small shops and restaurants and the distinctively yellow houses with their red roofs framed by white lace-like decorations. Just north of Skagen is the sand-spit at Grenen, which attracts a multitude of visitors year after year. At Grenen, the waters of Skagerrak and Kattegat meet and here you can literally stand with one foot in either sea.

Golfers have six+ courses within an hour’s drive to choose from, the closest is Frederikshavn Golf Club (8 km).

For families there is a lot to do and things to see: Farm Fun, a few kilometres north of Jerup, where you can meet and pet animals such as kangaroos, goats, llamas and pot-bellied pigs to mention a few. Watch birds of prey at EagleWorld in Tversted, or experience sea wildlife at Nordsøen Oceanarium in Hirtshals with northern Europe’s largest aquarium. Why not spend a day at the big amusement park Fårup Sommerland near Blokhus on the west coast.
